The Baba Yaga ( A special Halloween Cinderella tale )
The Baba Yaga by W.R.S. Ralston read by Alastair Knowles
A special Halloween episode! The spooky BABA YAGA!
In Slavic folklore, Baba Yaga is a supernatural being (or a trio of sisters of the same name) who appears as a deformed or ferocious-looking old woman. In Russian culture, Baba Yaga lived in a hut usually described as standing on chicken legs.
Baba Yaga may help or hinder those that encounter her or seek her out. She may play a maternal role and has associations with forest wildlife. Baba Yaga commonly appears as either a donor, villain, or may be altogether ambiguous. Her depictions vary greatly across tales, ranging from a child-eating monster, to helping a protagonist find his missing bride.
William Ralston Shedden-Ralston (1828-1889) was a British folklorist and writer who became famous as a translator from Russia. He was in Russia a number of times where he made friends with major Russian writers of those times such as Turgenev and Afanasyev.
This classical Russian fairy-tale that was collected and translated by William Ralston Shedden-Ralston. The story tells us of a girl whose new stepmother wants to get rid of her and sends her to Baba Yaga for that purpose. But before doing that the girl visits her aunt who gives her advice how to avoid death.
